INDIANAPOLIS — Haylee Pennington led Goshen College with 6 kills Saturday afternoon as the Maple Leaf women's volleyball team opened the second half of its Crossroads League season with a three-set loss to NAIA eighth-ranked Marian University at MU's Physical Education Center.
Maddy Beaver had a hand in both of the match's blocks for Goshen, but the Knights (18-0, 10-0) got 59 of their 75 points by way of kills or aces and won 25-19, 25-17, 25-14.
Goshen (3-18, 0-10) hit .323 with 11 winners and a single misfire in the second set while Marian racked up a .340 percentage for the match, posting 53 winners against 19 errors on exactly 100 attempts. Allison Dreves and Gabby Fish each led MU with 7 kills apiece.
The teams traded 7-point runs to start the match before Goshen went up 11-9 on a Pennington winner. Marian had the answer to that, however, in the form of a 7-2 run with two Sarah Spangler kills that prompted a GC timeout at 19-16. Jai-Lyn Norwood posted two kills in the 4-0 run that ended the set.
Marian broke open an 8-8 second set with an 11-2 rally that included three Emma Hirchak kills, going up 19-10 on the way to doubling its lead to two sets. The Knights also opened a double-digit lead in the second set thanks to 12 straight rallies started by Serena Dodson's serve.
Goshen comes closer to home on Wednesday night for the return fixture in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup against Bethel University. The Maple Leafs will look to avenge a three-set loss from earlier in the month that helped the Pilots take a 1½-1 lead in the annual rivalry trophy. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at BU's Wiekamp Athletic Center.
