Cougars upend Goshen in final trip of season to Ohio

Maple Leafs blanked despite near-equal of attempts

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Henrique Eichenberger led all players with three shots on goal Wednesday night, but Mount Vernon Nazarene University got the better of Goshen College when it came to putting those shots into the goal as the Cougars topped the Maple Leafs 3-0 in a Crossroads League men's soccer competition.

Sammy Atkins posted a goal and an assist for the Cougars (6-3, 1-1), poking in an unassisted tally to double the lead in the 51st minute and setting up a Jack McKenzie strike to end Goshen's hopes of a comeback with 2:36 remaining. Nathan Parker scored the game's first goal 8:58 before halftime.

Matias da Fonseca made four saves for the Maple Leafs (4-4-3, 0-2), who held their own in a 7-6 deficit in shots on goal but gave up advantages of 18-8 in total shots and 13-7 in direct free kicks. Joshua Dunn saved all 6 GC shots on goal in backstopping MVNU to the shutout.

Iran Masis was the lone player to put multiple shots on goal for the Cougars: he and Zack Bowser took 4 shots each.

MVNU took the first three shots of the game and broke the ice on corner kicks when Ryan Walters took one 12 minutes into the contest. Counterintuitively and counterattackingly, that led to Goshen's first shot at the other end of the pitch as Lars Razor missed an attempt wide.

Dunn made two saves over the next five minutes as Goshen was able to pressure the MVNU defense to no avail. The Cougars would get the ball back to the other end, though, with a three-shot sequence in the 32nd minute leading up to Parker's opening score.

Goshen had another series of shots less than a minute apart right out of the intermission, but Atkins scored to double the lead with 39:21 remaining. Goshen's remaining chances all came after the 70th minute, as did half of the eight cards in the match.

Goshen returns to Indiana this weekend when it travels to the University of Saint Francis in search of its first CL win. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday evening at Bishop John D'Arcy Stadium in Fort Wayne.
