GOSHEN, Ind. – It was a tale of two halves for the Goshen men's basketball team on Wednesday night. While they hung in there with the #9 Grace Lancers in the first half, the second half was controlled by the visitors. The Lancers won 85-49.
Grace scored the first six points, but Goshen took its first lead at 9-8. The Leafs had a three-point lead at one point and were tied multiple times – eight times in the first half. They were tied at 28 with two minutes to go. However, the Lancers finished the half how they started it – on a 6-0 run. They led 34-28 at the break.
Goshen made four early free throws in the second half and was down four. Then the Lancers went off on a 26-0 run in eight minutes and fifty-nine seconds to put the game out of reach. They outscored Goshen 51-21 in the second half and took the win, 85-49.
Michael Johnson led the Maple Leafs with 16 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
Greg Johnson had nine points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Ryan Mansbarger added nine points and three boards.
Jake Wadding was the star of the show for Grace. He came into the game as the team's fourth-leading scorer, averaging 12.7 points per game. Tonight he had 31.
Goshen's defense was a bright spot. Grace came into the game with the second-highest shooting percentage in the NAIA, but they were held to 41.8% tonight. They also had just eight assists when they averaged 17.9. On the other hand, the Lancers held GC to shooting 26.6% from the floor. Grace has an 8-1 record on the road this season.
Next up for the Maple Leafs is a U.S. Highway 20 Cup matchup with Bethel. They will play on Saturday, January 15, at 3:00 pm in Mishawaka. The next home contest is Tuesday, January 18, at 7:00 pm against Huntington.
