GOSHEN, Ind. – In a game that didn't see much scoring for either team, the Maple Leafs women's basketball team fell to the Grace Lancers, 52-44 in Goshen on Wednesday night.
The Lancers started the game with a couple of free throws from Karlee Feldman to get the scoring underway, but turnovers, steals, and missed shots kept the score 2-0. Then
Taniece Chapman got Goshen on the board nearly four and a half minutes into the game to tie it at two. Grace ended the quarter on a 10-0 run and held Goshen to four points in the first. The Leafs got into a rhythm in the second and outscored Grace 17-12. At the half, the visitors led 28-21.
Goshen was down nine in the third, but a 10-3 run brought them back to within two. It was a one-point game at the quarter's end. And although they got close, Goshen never had a lead during the game. The Lancers held the Leafs to just seven in the final frame, and they came out on top 52-44.
Taniece Chapman recorded a double-double for the Leafs with 14 points and ten rebounds.
Graysen Cockerham had nine points and six rebounds.
Kyla Foster added five points, four boards, and four assists.
Grace won the rebounding margin tonight, 45-35. They held the Leafs to shooting 30.8% from the field. Goshen was also just 8-17 at the free-throw line.
Grace was coming off of two close losses. On January 5, they lost to #11 Indiana Wesleyan 65-59. Then on January 8, they were defeated by Taylor in overtime, 90-81. Goshen won three of their last four games and beat #24 Mount Vernon Nazarene on the road on Saturday, 69-61.
The next game for Goshen is a U.S. Highway 20 Cup matchup at Bethel on Saturday, January 15, at 1:00 pm. The next home contest will be Wednesday, January 19, at 7:00 pm against Huntington.
