INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A talented trio for the #7 Marian Knights took down the Goshen Maple Leafs women's basketball team on Wednesday night in Indianapolis, 80-53. For the Leafs,
Syanne Mohamed set a season-high with six field goals made and tied her mark with 12 points scored.
Marian scored the first five points and the last five points of the first quarter. They took their seven-point lead from the first and continued the momentum in the second – going on a 10-0 run that went between the two quarters. Abby Downard shot 2-2 from the field and 4-4 behind the line in the second quarter alone, and the Knights held a 41-21 lead at halftime.
Goshen cut the lead to 15 at one point in the third, but they were eventually outscored by two points in the quarter. Marian extended their ten-game winning streak to 11 after winning tonight by 27.
Mohamed neared a double-double with her 12 points and nine rebounds. She had four offensive rebounds, which led both teams.
Taniece Chapman also had 12 points with five rebounds, and
Graysen Cockerham put up 11 points.
Kyla Foster and
Janara Flowers each scored seven.
Downard finished with 22 for Marian – from 9-11 shooting, 4-4 from the free-throw line, and no turnovers. Ella Collier, who was named Crossroads League Player of the Week for December 20-26, had 20 points, and reigning Crossroads League Player of the Year, Imani Guy, added 16.
A win would have been the third straight for the Leafs, but instead, the Knights (13-2, 5-0 CL) continue their stretch of no losses since November 13. Their average margin of victory during this 11-game win streak is +21.3 points per game. They shot an incredible 56% from the field tonight. They are 6
th in the NAIA in that category.
Goshen (8-9, 2-3 CL) has another opportunity to take down a ranked opponent on Saturday afternoon. They will play at Mount Vernon Nazarene at 1:00 pm on January 8. MVNU is the only other Crossroads League team that is still undefeated in league play, along with Marian.
The next home game for GC is Wednesday, January 12, at 6:00 pm against Grace. This doubleheader with the men's team will be the Destiny Rescue Blackout Game – where fans can assist in the rescue of children who are victims of human trafficking by pledging to donate per assist in the two games.
