FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A goal by
Anita Tavares with less than three minutes remaining was all that Goshen needed in a 1-0 win at Saint Francis on Saturday night. The Leafs ended a skid of five straight games without a goal and now sit at 1-2 in the Crossroads League and 4-6-1 overall.
Tavares had five shots on goal in the game – she had a total of five shots on goal all last season. She had never taken more than two shots on goal in a game in her collegiate career. This was her third goal of the season which ties her for the team lead with
Madalyne Swallow and
Seja Lang. And it came at a time when the Goshen defense wasn't allowing anything to get through.
Victoria Naylor made five saves while posting a clean sheet. Cougars goalie Amber Morgan made ten saves but allowed the late goal that made the difference. 73.3% of Goshen's shots were on goal – a season-high. After a 6-0 beating against West Virginia Tech on September 5, the Leafs had been held without a goal until tonight. In that five-game span, they had been outscored 10-0.
Goshen is 3-0-1 against the Cougars in the last four meetings. GC is at Bethel on Saturday, October 8, at 3:00 pm in a U.S. Highway 20 cup competition.
