GOSHEN, Ind. – The Maple Leafs held their own against the 11th-best team in the NAIA on Saturday afternoon. But the Bethel Pilots scored with twenty minutes to go to win 1-0 on homecoming weekend.
Matias da Fonseca made an incredible 17 saves in goal for the Maple Leafs. He fended off 12 shots on goal in the first half alone, keeping the teams tied as they went into halftime. Bethel had a blast that went off the post in the first half, and Goshen's
Mathurin Allawai had one that hit the crossbar.
Bethel's goal came with just over 20 minutes remaining in the game, as Tim Noeding scored from a pass by Peiro Sabroso. It is Noeding's first goal of the season. The Pilots finished with 27 shots compared to five from Goshen. Sabroso totaled five shots on goal for Bethel.
Mathurin Allawai took three of Goshen's five shots, and
Felipe Carli took the team's lone shot on goal.
The Pilots are now winners of nine straight games after starting the season 2-1-1. Coming into today, they had outscored their last four opponents 12-1.
Today was also the first game that Goshen College's new mascot, Dash, has made an appearance at. Dash was unveiled yesterday, October 7, and has been making his rounds over the last couple of days, meeting fellow Maple Leafs fans during homecoming weekend.
Goshen now sits at 1-8-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Crossroads League. The Leafs are at Grace on Wednesday, October 12, at 7:00 pm.
