SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Head coach
Kyle Capps earned his first victory as head coach of the Maple Leafs men's basketball team as Goshen beat Holy Cross College on Friday evening 79-72. The game was played at IU-South Bend and was a part of the Crossroads/Chicagoland Challenge.
The Leafs started with a quick 7-1 advantage after a three from Caleb Wright. Moments after the Saints tied the game at 18-18, Clayton MacLagan knocked down a three to take the lead. On the ensuing Holy Cross possession, Wright stole the ball and MacLagan hit another three to bring the lead to six.
The Saints erased the Goshen deficit yet again, even taking a 31-30 lead. Yet GC ended the half on a 9-2 run - though neither team scored in the last 2:14.
The first lead for the Saints in the second half came with just over 12 minutes to go, but they could never get up by more than two points. After the teams were tied at 70 with about six and a half minutes to go, Goshen ended the game like they ended the first half - with another 9-2 run. The Leafs won the game 79-72 and picked up their first win of the season.
Five Maple Leafs scored in double figures - Caleb Wright, Greg Johnson II, Clayton MacLagan, Elias Ramirez, and Judah Simfukwe. Simfukwe had six rebounds to go with his ten points. Greg Johnson II had four assists and 16 points. The Leafs had eight steals from seven different players - the Saints had just two steals on the night. Goshen had four blocks and Holy Cross had one.
The Saints controlled the rebounding category with a 40-27 edge. However, Goshen had a 53.6% field goal percentage and capitalized by scoring 17 points off of Holy Cross turnovers.
Goshen is 1-2 this season and is back in the win column against the Saints after losing the previous two matchups between the schools. The Maple Leafs are at IU-East on Tuesday, November 8, at 7:00 pm.
