Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Justin DeWeese

Goshen wins 11 of 14 sets at Judson University Tournament

Numerous career-highs set in first match loss

ELGIN, Ill. – On their second day at the Judson University Tournament, the Maple Leafs men's volleyball team went 1-1. Against the host, Judson, Goshen lost in five sets – 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-13. Then in their second match, they came back to defeat Lincoln College in a sweep – 25-19, 25-15, 28-26.

The Judson match was the complete opposite of Goshen's home win on Wednesday evening against Mount Vernon Nazarene. In that match, Goshen came back from being down two sets to none to win in five for the first time in program history. This time, however, Judson was the team that would come back from 2-0.

Head coach Lauren Ford said that the team lacked mental toughness. Goshen hit .375 in the second set, but all the other sets were under .150. Alexander Rabadzhiev had a career-high 27 kills in the match. There was also a career-high for Michael Wahl – he recorded 52 assists. Brayton Yoder tied a career-high with 22 digs. And to add to it, Andy Bennett tied a career-high with his eight total blocks. Goshen had 16 blocks as a team compared to nine for Judson. The win for the Eagles (13-2) ends a five-match winning streak that Goshen held in the matchup.

In the second match against Lincoln College, the Lynx only had the lead for one point in the first two sets. The third set was tight, but the Maple Leafs still prevailed. GC won in the kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs categories. Wahl had four aces in the match to go with his 35 assists. Pablo Sanchez had nine digs, and Insee Akarapan had seven. Andrew Salinas added five kills, two digs, and an assist. Goshen has now won five straight against Lincoln College (3-7).

The Leafs conclude the tournament with three wins and one loss – winning 11 of the 14 sets they played in. With a 9-4 record this season, Goshen will compete at Cornerstone on Tuesday, February 15. The WHAC matchup will take place at 7:00 pm. The next home game is the following night, Wednesday, February 16, against (RV) Aquinas at 7:00 pm.
