GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen women's basketball team scored 100+ points in regulation against a conference opponent for the first time on Saturday against Bethel. Goshen won 108-98 in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup rivalry game and recognized their seniors for Senior Day.
Emily Brandeberry,
Taniece Chapman,
Graysen Cockerham,
Kiarah Copeland,
Janara Flowers, and manager Ronit Goswami were all acknowledged for their contributions to the program.
First to the game action. The Maple Leafs had lost by 38 when they played the Pilots just a little over a month ago. Bethel won 113-75 in Mishawaka, but the tables were turned this afternoon. Goshen led by one after the first quarter and two at the half. The Leafs maintained a one-point lead at the third quarter's end but trailed by two with 8:36 to go in the fourth. However, Goshen went on a 14-2 scoring stretch that gave them an 89-79 lead. While not out of reach, Goshen was able to secure the victory, and head coach
Stephanie Miller was able to take all five of her seniors off the court together.
Taniece Chapman had 26 points – her second-highest total this season. Her 17 rebounds are her third-best in a game this year. Eight of them were at the offensive end.
Janara Flowers scored 16 and was 6-8 at the line.
Kyla Foster put up 15 off the bench with eight rebounds and four assists in 15 minutes.
Graysen Cockerham had a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds. She also added six assists and three steals. Kiama Oelling scored 12 off of the bench and had two blocks.
Despite shooting just 15.8% from the free-throw line, Goshen's overall field goal percentage was 50.6%. Seventy-two points were in the paint.
Goshen is a seven-seed in the Crossroads League Tournament and will play at Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday, February 22, at 7:00 pm. If the Maple Leafs win, they will face the winner of Saint Francis and Grace on the road.
Below is what was said about the senior class after the women's win today.
First to be recognized from the women's team is manager Ronit Goswami! He is escorted by his parents, Ranendra and Neer Goswami. Ronit was a manager for the men's team for two seasons before switching over to the women's team for this season. "Ronit has been a wonderful addition to the GCWBB family. He is a tireless worker, takes pride in helping and serving others, and has been like a brother to these women that have been his teammates throughout the season." He is studying exercise science and plans to attend grad school at Loyola University Chicago to get his master of science in exercise science. Thank you, Ronit, for your efforts and hard work this season.
Next up is #24,
Emily Brandeberry! Emily is being escorted by her parents, Nancy and Bruce Brandeberry. Emily played in 58 games throughout her career at Goshen. She totaled 52 points and 51 rebounds – with 23 points and 27 rebounds during her junior year. Against Blackburn this season, she scored a career-high eight points and was a perfect 6-6 at the free-throw line. Emily is a marine and environmental science major and plans to return to Goshen to pursue a teaching license for a future career in secondary education. Emily has been a true leader by example both on and off the floor for our program. No one works harder in the classroom and on her game. She has been a team mom or "momma bear" and is genuinely a "glue girl" within our locker room that looks after other players and supports every teammate. She does all the intangibles, big and little, that help a team become successful and is the type of person every coach wants on their squad. Thank you, Emily!
Next, we have #34,
Taniece Chapman! Taniece is escorted by her mom Roniece Woodson, her grandmother Gwendolyn Woodson, and many more family members. Taniece has played in 116 games as a Maple Leaf and started in 103 of them. She is ranked second in program history with 939 rebounds and fifth in points with 1,449. This season, she is averaging 15 points and 9.2 rebounds per game and has scored at least nine points in every game. She is an exercise science major and intends to go back to school for nursing while picking up a coaching gig. Taniece has been the player that I have seen grow the most in her four years at Goshen as a student, player, and person. She has been a beast on the court, a fierce competitor, and someone who has made her mark on this program from top to bottom. She has been an exciting player to watch on the court over the years, but what her teammates will remember even more is the genuine, hilarious, and caring person she is and how she has impacted the people inside the locker room. Thank you, Taniece!
Let's congratulate #4,
Graysen Cockerham! Graysen is escorted by her parents, Nathan and Gio Cockerham, and her brother Cameron Ritchey. Graysen started in all 115 games she played at Goshen. She is the seventh leading scorer in program history with 1,340 points and the sixth-best rebounder with 648 boards. This season she is averaging nearly 11 points and five rebounds per game. Graysen is majoring in sports management and marketing and intends to pursue her master's in communications at Auburn University and serve as a grad assistant in the athletic department's ticket office. Graysen has been a steady leader who has put her heart and soul into building the culture and direction of this program. She has been versatile in her talents, both on and off the floor, has been a teammate that the locker room can always count on, and has made her mark in the lives of the players, as well as in the history book. Thank you, Graysen!
Our next Goshen senior is #2,
Kiarah Copeland! Rachel McComb is escorting Kiarah. Kiarah has played in 80 games with the Leafs and started in 25. She has 408 points, 143 rebounds, 124 assists, and 66 steals in her career. She is third on the team this season with 53 assists. Kiarah is a sports management major and will be a grad assistant for the Central Michigan Chippewas women's basketball team after graduation. Kiarah has been the brains and vocals of the operation. She is a coach on the floor, is one of the most competitive players on the team who hates to lose (even in a TikTok competition), and may seem to have a tough outer shell, but is a real softie on the inside. Ki has truly grown as a student-athlete here at Goshen, and I'm excited about her next journey. Thank you, Ki!
Last but not least on the women's side, #1,
Janara Flowers! Janara is escorted by her parents, Jacinta and John, and her brother John Flowers. Janara has played in 82 games in three seasons and started in 64. She has started in 14 of the last 15 games. Janara has averaged nearly eight points per game in her career at Goshen. She owns the program record for best free-throw percentage in a season when she made 88.9% of her attempts at the line in the 2019-2020 season. As a business major, Janara wants to pursue a finance or risk management career. She has been a genuine team player, a warrior who has battled through injury to be there for her team, and a person of character, on and off the court, that everyone enjoys having as a teammate and that others can learn from. She may have a gentle and kind personality but has been a real competitor on the floor for the GCWBB program over the last three years. Thank you, Janara!
Ladies and gentlemen, please help me give a round of applause to your 2022 women's basketball seniors!
