WINONA LAKE, Ind. – In a game that was eerily similar to their previous matchup against Grace this season, the Maple Leafs women's basketball team lost 45-51 in Winona Lake on Wednesday evening. They had lost in Goshen in January by a score of 44-52.
The Leafs led 7-0 early on with baskets by
Syanne Mohamed,
Kyla Foster, and a three from
Janara Flowers. However, the home team ended the quarter with an 8-0 run to take a one-point advantage. The run continued in the second quarter and moved to a 12-0 run. Goshen would take the lead later in the quarter and never let it get out of hand.
The Lancers built an eight-point lead in the third, but Goshen reeled them back in. GC never took the lead in the third and fourth quarters but was consistently within two or three points. Grace outscored Goshen in every quarter, despite each being in small amounts.
Janara Flowers was the leading scorer for Goshen. She had eight points with four rebounds.
Taniece Chapman had seven points and nine rebounds,
Kyla Foster had seven points and three rebounds, and
Sa'drea Rougeau had seven points and two rebounds off the bench.
Syanne Mohamed added six points with eight rebounds.
The Leafs shot just 25% from the field despite winning the rebound margin by four. For Grace, Karlee Feldman recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. A bright spot for Goshen was that they held Maddie Ryman, the leading scorer in the Crossroads League, to just seven points in over 37 minutes of action.
Goshen drops to 11-15 this season with a 6-8 mark in the Crossroads League. With losses by Spring Arbor and Huntington tonight, Goshen has clinched a spot in the Crossroads League tournament. The quarterfinal matchups in the tournament will take place on Tuesday, February 22. The Maple Leafs will for sure play on that date, but it will be on the road. Grace improved to 16-10 this year and 7-8 in the conference with the win.
On Saturday, February 12, Goshen is at home against Mount Vernon Nazarene at 1:00 pm. The men will play the latter half of the doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
