GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen baseball team started their home season Sunday afternoon. In six hours and nineteen minutes of baseball, Goshen came out 0-2. They lost game one in 12 innings, 11-13, and game two 4-15.
The Maple Leafs had to fight back multiple times in game one to stay in it.
Evan Creager doubled to score
Char Reeves and
Morgan Baker in the bottom of the ninth. That tied the game at seven and sent it to extras.
Eric Pettipiece also helped keep Goshen alive. In 5.1 innings of relief, he allowed two earned runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked two.
In the eleventh inning, the Knights scored twice. Goshen was down to their final out when
Camm Nickell got to first as Marian's first baseman couldn't control the ball. This scored
Nate Lange and
Gabe Kermode, and the teams went to the twelfth.
Marian had four runs in this inning, including a home run by JJ Rivera. Goshen got two in the bottom half, but the Knights won 13-11.
Peyton Smith had a home run for Goshen in the fourth inning. Lange was 3-6 with a double, two runs, an RBI, and a walk.
Evan Creager,
Joseph Cerda, and
Jenner Rodammer all had two hits.
The Maple Leafs attacked first in game two. Nickell doubled in the first to score Lange, and Rodammer's sacrifice fly brought in Nickell. Marian produced five runs in the third to create a 6-2 advantage. When
Joshua Rubio homered for the Leafs, the Knights led 7-4.
The visitors doubled their offensive production in the sixth inning alone with seven more runs. After the second out of the inning, Marian still brought eight batters to the plate. They added one more run in the seventh and won 15-4.
Dalton Soergel had the loss for Goshen, allowing five earned runs through 2.2 innings. Lange was 2-3, Rodammer went 2-4, and Rubio was 2-3.
Goshen and Marian compete again tomorrow, March 21, in Goshen, starting at 1:00 pm.
