WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Maple Leafs softball team completed a doubleheader sweep at Grace on Saturday and won three of the four games this season against the Lancers. Goshen won game one 11-9 and game two 4-3.
Goshen was down 2-0 after the first inning in game one and 7-4 after the second inning. However, a five run inning in the third put the Leafs on top for the first time. Another two runs came in the fourth to extend the lead to 11-8. Grace tacked on one run in the bottom of the seventh, but Goshen secured an 11-9 win.
Ri Koteles hit a two-RBI single in the second and
Kyra Wilson brought two runs home with her single to shallow left in the fourth. Koteles finished 2-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs. Wilson went 3-4 with one RBI and two runs.
Mia Pawelski also had a 3-4 game - with two runs and one RBI.
Grace Schmitt was 2-4 and scored twice.
Ailsyn Catenacci picked up her first win on the mound this season. In four innings of relief, she allowed two earned runs and six hits. Pawelski earned the save, not allowing any runs or hits in her inning of work.
Both teams scored a run in the first to start game two, but the Maple Leafs had a three-run inning in the second.
Jessica Bachtell hit an RBI single up the middle and Koteles had a two-RBI double to deep center field.
With the Maple Leafs leading 4-1, the Lancers put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth. But the teams were scoreless in the last three innings and the Leafs won 4-3.
Goshen starter
Ellie Van Heerde allowed three runs but only one earned run in 5.2 innings. She struck out two and allowed six hits on the way to the win. This was her longest outing of the season and she now sports a 3-0 record. Pawelski had the save - not allowing any runs and striking out three over the last inning and a third.
Bachtell was 3-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
Shea VanScoter, Koteles, and Wilson also had multi-hit games.
The Maple Leafs are 7-2-1 against Grace in the coach Plezbert era. This is Plezbert's best record against a conference opponent, but she is also 7-4 against Huntington and 6-4 against Bethel. This is the first opponent Goshen has beat three times in a season since doing it to Bethel last year.
After the Easter holiday, the Maple Leafs (18-20, 8-16 CL) play at Taylor on Monday at 4:00 pm but host the Trojans on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
