Goshen splits doubleheader in Upland

Leafs end 16-game drought against the Trojans

UPLAND, Ind. - After being run-ruled in game one, the Maple Leafs came back to win game two at Taylor with the guidance of Ri Koteles and Mia Pawelski. Goshen lost game one 8-0 in five innings, but won the second contest 5-3.

Taylor starting pitcher Maddi Evans quickly went through the Maple Leafs starting lineup in game one. In her five innings, she struck out nine, didn't allow any walks or earned runs, and just one hit. The only hit that Goshen could manage was a leadoff single to left by Shea VanScoter.

A two-run home run in the third put Taylor on the board, and they followed it with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The game took just an hour and fifteen minutes to complete.

VanScoter allowed five runs in four innings on the mound but only two of them were earned.

The tables turned in game two when Goshen found their offense quickly.

In the first, VanScoter doubled, Koteles singled, and Alyssa McDonald was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Leafs. An error sent Claire Ouellette to first and brought VanScoter home for Goshen's first run of the day. Next, Carissa Fillingame singled, and Koteles scored.

Goshen got baserunners with no outs in the next inning, too. Kaylee Kates singled, and VanScoter walked to get two runners on for Koteles. The senior Everence Student-Athlete of the Week delivered a three-run home run that opened the lead to 5-0.

With Mia Pawelski on the mound for GC, Taylor scored two unearned runs from a sac fly and an RBI single in the third. Then a home run in the fifth cut Goshen's lead to 5-3. But the Maple Leafs were able to hold out for the remaining two innings to win the game by that score.

Pawelski allowed just one earned run in her seven innings pitched. She walked six batters, but she had six strikeouts as well. She allowed five hits. Pawelski has seen her ERA decrease in each of her last five appearances.

Koteles was 2-5 with two runs and three RBIs. VanScoter was 2-4 with two runs, Fillingame went 2-3 with the double, and Kates was 2-3 and scored a run.

The win ends a 16-game losing streak against the Trojans (18-17, 15-9 CL) that dated back to March 27, 2017.

Goshen hosts Taylor tomorrow, April 20. The Trojans and Maple Leafs face off at 3:00 pm on Wednesday at the Goshen College Softball Complex.
