Taylor takes two to wrap up series

Smith hits his fifth home run of the season

UPLAND, Ind. – After splitting the doubleheader on Friday, the Maple Leafs baseball team lost both games to Taylor on Saturday – a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll. The Trojans won game one 13-1 and game two 10-3.

All 13 of Taylor's runs came in the first two innings, with 11 coming in the second. The second inning scoring got underway with a three-run home run off the bat of TJ Bass to make the score 5-0. Later in the inning, Bass was up to bat again as he hit a two-RBI single and advanced to second on the throw. The Trojans had six hits, three walks, and four batters hit by a pitch in the inning.

The Maple Leafs settled in after Taylor's offensive explosion. Peyton Smith homered down the left-field line in the fourth to get Goshen on the board – his fifth home run this season. A trio of Goshen pitchers combined to allow just one hit over the final four innings that they pitched. Kaleb Bodfish pitched two innings, Giacomo Padilla threw one, and Jackson Pedigo pitched in the sixth. The group struck out three, didn't allow any walks or runs, and didn't hit any batters. Nonetheless, Goshen lost 13-1.

Taylor's Michael Pinarski earned the win by allowing one earned run in six innings pitched. Bass finished with five RBIs, and Kaleb Kolpien had three hits. Besides Smith's homer, Nate Lange, Camm Nickell, and Joseph Cerda each had hits.

In game two, the Trojans (24-10, 14-4 CL) went back to putting runs on the board in each of the first four innings. Bass led the charge with an RBI single in the first and a two-run home run to left in the second. Similarly, Conner Crawford hit a two-RBI single in the first and a two-run homer in the second.

Goshen's runs came from a second-inning RBI groundout from Morgan Baker in the second, a bases-loaded walk to Gage Andrews in the seventh, and an RBI single from Jenner Rodammer in the seventh.

Taylor's Luke Shively earned the win – and he bumps his record up to 8-0 this season. He allowed one earned run off three hits in five innings and is tied for seventh in the NAIA in wins. Kyle Staelgraeve picked up the loss – allowing seven earned runs in 1.2 innings.

Goshen plays their next eight games at home. On Monday, April 4, the Leafs take on Mount Vernon Nazarene, starting at 2:00 pm.
