ADRIAN, Mich. – Strong pitching in both games led Siena Heights to two home wins over Goshen on Wednesday evening. The Saints won 4-0 and 6-3, allowing just five hits all day.
In game one, Chase Molnar of Siena Heights and
David Lopez for Goshen were battling it out in a pitcher's duel. The Saints scored an unearned run in the first, but otherwise, both teams were held scoreless through the fifth inning. Lopez had held the Saints to just one hit through five.
However, Siena Heights hit two crucial doubles in the sixth that brought in three runs. Goshen couldn't score in the seventh, and 4-0 was the final score.
Lopez allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out three. Molnar allowed just two hits and no earned runs in seven innings pitched. He fanned eight and walked two.
Nate Lange and
Gabe Kermode had the two Goshen hits.
Goshen put runs on the board the first chance they got in game two.
Camm Nickell hit a double to right-center in the first that scored
Jenner Rodammer. Then,
Joseph Cerda hit a triple to right that brought Nickell across the plate.
The lead wouldn't last, as the Saints responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. However, the Leafs tied it up in the fourth. It came from another triple – this time off the bat of
Trent Sillett and scoring
Joseph Cerda.
Then it was Siena Heights with a two-RBI triple from Cameron Hammer to retake the lead. A run scored on a wild pitch in the sixth proved to be an insurance run for the home team as they won 6-3.
Kyle Staelgraeve allowed three earned runs in 1.1 innings for Goshen, taking the loss.
Eric Pettipiece allowed three earned runs and three hits in 4.2 innings.
The Leafs had just three hits in game two, although they were all for extra bases. It was the double by Nickell and the triples from Cerda and Sillett.
