HUNTINGTON, Ind. - After a 15-12 loss in a three-hour and twenty-seven-minute game one, the Maple Leafs baseball team came back to win game two, 6-4. The games were initially going to be played at Goshen, so the Leafs were still designated as the home team.
Both teams scored in six of their nine innings in the first game, but the Foresters scored at least two runs in five innings.
Goshen has RBI singles from
Camm Nickell and
Morgan Baker to take a 3-2 lead in the third. Huntington built up an 8-4 lead, but a triple from
Jenner Rodammer with the bases loaded made it a one-score game.
Goshen retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. The three-run inning gave the Leafs a 12-10 advantage, but Huntington made waves in the top of the ninth. They scored five runs to go up 15-12, and Goshen left a goose egg in the bottom of the ninth. 15-12 was the final.
The teams combined for 27 runs, 27 hits and five errors. A significant difference proved to be walks - as Goshen allowed ten but Huntington allowed just one.
Eric Pettipiece took the loss on the mound.
Jenner Rodammer had three RBIs from his bases-clearing triple and scored three times himself.
Camm Nickell was 3-5 with three RBIs.
Nate Lange scored twice and
Joseph Cerda had a couple of RBIs.
Peyton Smith homered to left in the first inning of game two, but Huntington went on to take a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Leafs responded with five runs. Lange hit an RBI single and Rodammer walked with the bases loaded. Then, with the bases still loaded, Smith emptied them very quickly with a double to left-center that gave GC a 6-4 lead.
Smith was also the starter for Goshen in game two. He and
Dalton Soergel combined to not allow any runs in the final three innings and the Leafs got the win - ending a five-game losing streak against Huntington.
"For our guys to answer back and not be defeated after giving up five runs in the ninth in game one speaks to their resiliency," shared head coach
Alex Childers. "
Joseph Cerda had some great at-bats and
Dalton Soergel coming in and shutting the door was a huge moment."
Smith was 2-3 at the plate with a run and four RBIs. His record on the mound is now 2-2.
Goshen will play at home on Saturday, April 23 (for real this time) at 1:00 pm against Huntington. Before the first game, there will be a moment of silence to remember Jay Harold "Sarge" Yoder, longtime professor emeritus of physical education and head coach at Goshen College. He died Thursday, April 14, 2022, surrounded by family. He was 94 years old. The baseball field was named after him in 2015. The four Maple Leaf seniors will be recognized between games -
Gage Andrews,
Evan Creager,
Camm Nickell, and
Kyle Staelgraeve. We hope to see you there!
