Baseball season ends at Spring Arbor

Goshen improved their season win total by eight games compared to 2021

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Goshen baseball season came to an end on Saturday in Spring Arbor. The Cougars came out on top 13-6 and 11-9.

Spring Arbor scored the first three runs in game one, but the Maple Leafs produced five runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Trent Sillett scored when Nate Lange bunted and reached first on a wild throw. Then Jenner Rodammer and Peyton Smith hit sacrifice flies before Joseph Cerda hit a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw of his at-bat.

And while Goshen scored once more in the fifth on an RBI double from Morgan Baker, the Cougars produced four runs in the fifth, two in the seventh, and three more in the eighth. They totaled 18 hits as they cruised to a 13-6 victory.

Goshen starter Camm Nickell had the loss on the mound, allowing four earned runs in five innings. He had three strikeouts and one walk. Cerda was 2-3 with the home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. It was his second home run of the year - his last one was on the previous Saturday against Huntington.

Game two was closer, but the home team pulled away at the end.

Goshen scored twice in the second inning - a walk by Gage Andrews with the bases loaded scored a run followed by an RBI single from Lange. In the third, Smith sent a double down the left field line that scored Rodammer, and then a double from Nickell scored Smith.

Goshen outhit Spring Arbor 12-9, but the Leafs also had six errors.

Down 7-5 as they headed into the seventh inning, GC rallied with four runs in the inning to retake the lead. A two-RBI single by Cerda was was the highlight for the Leafs, but SAU answered with four of their own in the bottom half. It was a grand slam by Evan Lorey that ended the game in walkoff fashion as the Cougars won 11-9.

Goshen starter Jack Bennett had a no decision - allowing three earned runs in his four innings on the mound. He had four strikeouts and two walks. Lange and Rodammer each went 3-4 at the plate, and Rodammer had two stolen bases. Nickell was 2-3 and Cerda was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Goshen concludes the season with an 11-39 record and a 6-30 mark in Crossroads League play. The Maple Leafs have proved to be building up this season - as they have made leaps and bounds forward from the season before.
