MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - The Mount Vernon Nazarene softball program remains undefeated at home this season as they beat Goshen 14-5 and 8-0. They needed just five innings in both games.
The Maple Leafs quickly had runners on the corners in the first inning of game one, and a single from
Claire Ouellette scored
Shea VanScoter to put Goshen on the board first.
Ri Koteles later came around, scoring on a wild throw.
The Cougars retaliated in the bottom of the second with three runs on five hits. Goshen scored thrice in the third, thanks to RBI singles from
Mia Pawelski,
Kaylee Kates, and
Alyssa McDonald. Yet, MVNU added another three runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to retake a 6-5 lead, which they would hold onto.
Things unraveled for the Leafs in the fourth. Mount Vernon, who is receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll, put up eight runs on seven hits to go up 14-5 after four. GC couldn't capitalize in the fifth, and the Cougars won by run rule, 14-5 after five innings.
Goshen starter
Mia Pawelski allowed five earned runs and nine hits in 2.1 innings. The Leafs were able to attack offensively when Sheridan Sullivan was on the mound - they accumulated eight hits during her 2.2 innings. But when Nadia Hoffman pitched the final 2.1 innings, Goshen couldn't muster a single hit.
Alyssa McDonald had two of Goshen's eight hits with an RBI to her name.

In the first, the Cougars put up three runs - two coming from a home run by Kaycee Ollis to left field. They doubled the lead in the second, now 6-0. Kennady Ruhl hit one over the left-field fence in the third, and an eighth run came in the fifth and ended the game, as MVNU won via the run-rule again.

Jessica Bachtell.
