JOLIET, Ill. - Each team had 15 shots and the game was tied for all but six minutes and three seconds. But the St. Francis Saints (Ill.) scored in the final two minutes to beat the Goshen women's soccer team 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Goshen was the first to connect when a throw-in from
Izabel Love bounced between two defenders and in front of
Anita Tavares. Tavares struck the ball to the top of the net  and the Leafs had a 1-0 lead.
But less than five minutes later, Allison Schaar put the Saints on the scoreboard from a corner kick by Andrea Aguirre that first reached Ixchel Pelayo.
Rhiannon Holmes provided much of the offensive attack for Goshen. The transfer had five shots with two on goal.
Madalyne Swallow and
Brynja Hjartardottir also had multiple shot attempts.
The Saints scored the game-winner with just 1:48 to go when Mia Ocana crossed the ball from the right corner and Aguirre's header made the score 2-1. Shortly after, the Saints left with a win in their first game of the season.
Goshen had a slight advantage in the shots on goal category with a 7-6 edge. Krystal Rodriguez had six saves for St. Francis.
Now with two regular season games under their belt, the Maple Leafs will take on Trine in an exhibition game on Saturday, August 27, at 5:00 pm. That game will be at the GC Soccer Complex and will not be live streamed.
