Leafs falter after strong start

The team .202 hitting percentage is the second best for Goshen in a match this season

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Maple Leafs were in a position to win the first set against Spring Arbor on Wednesday night, but the Cougars rallied and went on to win 3-0.

The Leafs held a 23-19 lead in the first set after scoring three straight points and then led 24-21, a point away from winning the set. However, Spring Arbor scored the next three to tie it. And although Goshen scored the next point and had a chance to seal it away again, the Cougars capitalized late and won 27-25.

The teams were tied at 21 late in the second set before the visitors pulled away at the end, scoring four of the last five points. SAU (10-6, 1-4) built a 14-7 lead in the third set, which powered them to a 25-15 win.

Despite the loss, the team's .202 hitting percentage is the second best for Goshen in a match this season. Kia Knox-Dawkins had a .269 hitting percentage with ten kills and three digs. Emily Lynch was at .227 with ten kills and four digs. Brenna Spangler hit at a .357 clip with six kills and two block assists. Sydney Stutsman led all players on the court with 33 assists, Sadie Brenneman picked up 12 digs, and Kennedy Land added two aces.

Goshen (2-17, 0-5) hosts Cougars for the third time in a row on Friday - this time the Cougars from Mount Vernon Nazarene. MVNU is receiving votes in the most recent NAIA coaches poll. The match will start at 7:00 pm on September 23.
