Bontreger moves up scoring list but GC can't handle IWU on road

The next three matches for Goshen are all at home

MARION, Ind. – Lucas Bontreger moved closer to the top ten scorer's list in Goshen College program history on Saturday night. But his goal was the only one for the Leafs in a 3-1 loss at Indiana Wesleyan, a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll.

The Wildcats scored two goals quickly and within minutes of each other. Winter Casseus tapped one in off a header from Cole Little just seven minutes in, and Brandon Nyagurungo tapped one around the goalkeeper for the second IWU goal in the tenth minute. Bontreger scored his third goal of the season from a free kick later in the half. Indiana Wesleyan created a little more separation in the second half when Giuseppe Santacronce put one in to make it 3-1.

Goshen had more shots in the second half than the Wildcats (3-2) and corner kicks in the match (8-6). Bontreger had three shots on goal, and Martin Gonzales and Felipe Carli each had one. Matias da Fonseca made four saves in goal.

Indiana Wesleyan sits at 1-0-0 in the Crossroads League with the win and 7-1-2 overall. Goshen is 0-7-2 and 0-1-0 in the conference. The Leafs now being a stretch of three consecutive home games against Mount Vernon Nazarene, Saint Francis, and Bethel. Goshen hosts MVNU on Wednesday, September 28, at 7:00 pm.
