WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A nine-point Goshen rally in the middle of the second set turned the tides from the Lancers to the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night in Winona Lake. Yet, Grace recovered and took down Goshen in three sets, 25-16, 27-25, 25-20.
The Leafs never held the lead in the first set and were in a hole early in the second. They slowly recovered to come within two points until Grace brought the lead back up to five at 16-11. Then, a bad set by the Lancers started a 9-0 Goshen streak with
Sadie Brenneman serving. First-years
Kia Knox-Dawkins and
Brenna Spangler had two kills each during the stretch, and the Leafs capitalized on bad sets and attack errors.
Goshen led 20-16, but Grace came back with four straight points to tie it up. GC had two set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but the Lancers came back to win 27-25.
A 6-0 run in the third set by Goshen kept them from slipping in the middle of the set, with Brenneman serving yet again. Grace slowly created a gap midway through and won 25-20.
Grace had eight errors in the second set but won the kills category by 19 for the night.
Sydney Stutsman had 19 assists,
Kassidy Faler totaled 15 digs, and Brenneman recorded two aces.
Emily Lynch and Brenneman had eight kills each to lead the Leafs.
Now at 0-1 in the Crossroads League and 2-9 overall, Goshen competes in the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament at Indiana Tech before resuming league play. On Friday, September 9, Goshen faces the host, Indiana Tech, at 2:00 pm. They play Saint Ambrose later in the day at 6:00 pm.
