Goshen sticks with #7 IWU through three quarters but Wildcats escape

Neat scores 21, GC totals 31 turnovers

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Maple Leafs team that showed up against #7 Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday night looked much different than the team that played them just a week ago. The teams were tied after three quarters in Gunden Gymnasium, but the Wildcats outscored the Leafs 20-8 in the fourth quarter to win 55-43. IWU has won nine straight games.

The teams were tied after the first, second, and third quarters. Indiana Wesleyan started on a 14-7 run, but the Maple Leafs scored the following nine points to go up 16-14. Zion Neat scored 14 points in the first half and was a perfect 3-3 on three-point attempts. At the break, Goshen shot 47.6% compared to 32.1% for the visitors.

Both teams made four baskets in the third quarter, but Goshen did so in six attempts while Indiana Wesleyan had 15. Neat scored seven more points to put her total for the game at 21.

Maddie Lawrence and Kelli Damman made early buckets in the fourth quarter to put IWU up 39-35 - forcing Goshen head coach Stephanie Miller to call a timeout. It was a part of a 15-5 run that led to a 50-40 lead for Indiana Wesleyan and another Goshen timeout. The Maple Leafs cut the deficit to seven but didn't score any points in the final three minutes. The Wildcats escaped with a 12-point win, improving to 17-3 overall and 9-1 in the Crossroads League.

Zion Neat didn't have any fourth-quarter points but finished with 21 on 7-12 shooting. She was 3-4 from deep and 4-4 at the free throw line with four rebounds. Kiana Oelling provided three blocks - tying a career-high. Although Goshen's field goal percentage was 9.5% higher than Indiana Wesleyan's, GC had 18 fewer shot attempts and 14 more turnovers. Goshen ended the night with 31 turnovers, the second-most they have had in a game this season. Nine Goshen players had at least one turnover, and three had at least five.

On the bright side, the Wildcats were stopped offensively - tying a season-low with just 55 points scored. The team's leading scorer, Lilli Frasure, was held to ten points for the evening. The game was a far cry from the 103-56 win for the IWU in Marion just seven days ago.

The Maple Leafs look to stop a losing skid when they host Bethel on Saturday, January 21, at 1:00 pm. Goshen lost the previous U.S. Highway 20 Cup matchup in Mishawaka this past Saturday, 67-56.
