GOSHEN, Ind. - A kill by
Christian Rodriguez won the Maple Leafs the first set against #10 Lourdes on Friday night, but the Gray Wolves won the following three sets and improved to 6-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Lourdes won the first two points of the match, but Goshen took the next four. Neither team took more than a two-point lead the entire set. A kill by
Hasan Hadzic put Goshen at set point, but Lourdes scored the next two, and they were at set point.
Ishmail Bangura had a kill to tie it, and Hadzic notched an ace to give Goshen a one-point advantage. After a GC service error, Goshen scored the next two to win 28-26.
In the second set, the Leafs called a timeout when down 19-16 and then again at 21-18. After the second timeout, they scored the following two points and eventually tied it up at 22. The Gray Wolves took a timeout when up 24-23 and won the next point to win their first set of the evening.
Lourdes took control of the third set. While they only hit .190, Goshen was at a -.238 hitting percentage with just four kills and nine errors. The teams were tied six apiece when Lourdes went on a 10-0 run and later were up 21-8. The Leafs fought back toward the end, but it was too little too late. Lourdes won 25-15.
Down four early in the fourth set, Goshen rallied and went up 22-19.
Hasan Hadzic had a kill to put GC at set point and then had another when Lourdes was at set point. Next, it was a kill from
Ishmail Bangura to keep the Maple Leafs alive, and then Goshen had another set point at 27-26. But kills from Eduardo Ayala and Vinicius Lopes made up two of the final three Lourdes points, and they won the match 3-1.
The Gray Wolves were ranked third in the WHAC preseason poll, and Goshen was ninth.
Hasan Hadzic led Goshen in kills (21), aces (4), and blocks (5) and was second in digs (10).
Ian Fox had ten kills, four block assists, and a hitting percentage of .500.
Wyatt Bollinger had a season-high 45 assists, and
Pablo Sanchez totaled 14 digs.
The Maple Leafs (4-7, 3-6 WHAC) get a quick chance at revenge when they face Lourdes on Saturday. This time they will make the trip to Sylvania, Ohio, starting at 7:00 pm.
