OWENSBORO, Ky. - Eric Pettipiece pitched a complete game shutout in a 7-0 win at Brescia on Saturday afternoon. He struck out 11 while walking one and allowing just three hits in seven innings pitched. In game two, the Bearcats scored a late run in the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2.
Goshen scored three runs in the top of the first in game one.
Joseph Cerda doubled to left center to score
Austin Martin for the first run of the day and
Morgan Baker followed up in the next at bat with a sacrifice fly that scored
Preston Anderson.
Nate Lange had an RBI single later in the inning that scored Cerda.
Eric Pettipiece echoed Goshen's performance in the top of the first in the bottom half of the inning. The Bearcats went three up and three down - all three batters struck out swinging. He faced just three batters in the second, third, and fourth innings as well. Brescia didn't get their first baserunner of the game until there was one out in the bottom of the fifth.
The Maple Leafs added some padding to their lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Austin Martin had an RBI single that scored
Morgan Baker and then
Peyton Smith scored on an error from the shortstop that got
Preston Anderson on base. In the seventh, GC tacked on two more as Smith and
Trent Sillett hit RBI doubles.
Pettipiece finished with 11 strikeouts and one walk, allowing three hits and no earned runs. He threw 95 pitches in seven innings. He has an ERA of 4.05 this season with 22 strikeouts and five walks.
Austin Martin had a 2-5 game at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Preston Anderson continued Goshen's success on the mound in game two. The first-year pitched six innings and struck out seven batters while allowing one walk. In his previous two outings he combined to allow eight walks in eight innings.
Anderson didn't get as much offensive support compared to game one, however. The Leafs scored in the third with an RBI single from Sillett but Brescia recovered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single of their own. The Leafs took the lead back in the fourth with an RBI single from
Andres Garcia, and then the Bearcats tied it back up in the fifth with an unearned run on a throwing error. GC couldn't score in the final three innings despite getting a runner in scoring position in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Brescia scored the winning run as Wyatt Griskey hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Griskey played a role in all of Brescia's scoring plays. He hit the RBI single in the third, scored the run on the error in the fifth and hit the sac fly in the seventh.
Joseph Cerda had a double and a run scored for Goshen.
Josh Murphy pitched the final two thirds of an inning for the Maple Leafs.
Goshen is at Brescia again on Sunday, February 25, starting at noon for a doubleheader. This was originally a single nine-inning game but is now two seven-inning games.
