Leafs sweep SMWC in three sets, now 2-2 to start season

Bangura joins Rabadzhiev as only players in program history to record 20+ kills in back-to-back matches

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Maple Leafs men's volleyball team completed their back-to-back matches against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a three-set win on Saturday afternoon. With the 25-18, 26-24, 25-16 win, the Leafs are now 2-2 this season and 2-2 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

The Leafs scored the first three points of the match and led 20-13 late in the first set before winning it 25-18. Two kills by Ishmail Bangura and three SMWC attack errors led to a 5-0 Goshen run and a 10-6 lead in the second, but the Pomeroys stuck around. Goshen led 17-12, but the visitors crept back into the set and tied it at 18. The Leafs responded with a 6-3 run, but Saint Mary-of-the-Woods scored three straight points when GC was a point away from winning the set. After a timeout, Goshen answered by scoring two in a row to win 26-24.

Goshen came back in the third with a vengeance. They had 14 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, winning 25-16. These were Goshen's first matches in program history against the Pomeroys, who are making their inaugural season in the WHAC this year.

Bangura's 20 kills tied a program record for a three-set match, matching Alexander Rabadzhiev's 20 on March 15, 2019, against Thomas More. After 22 kills from Bangura on Friday night, it is just the fourth time in program history that a player has had 20+ kills in back-to-back matches. Rabadzhiev was the one to do so the previous three times. Bangura had just three attack errors and a .531 hitting percentage.

Wyatt Bollinger recorded 32 assists, the second-most of his career, after recording 39 last night. Goshen had nine aces compared to SMWC and six blocks compared to two for the visitors. Andy Bennett totaled eight digs, Bangura added seven, and Bollinger had six. Bollinger also had one kill - it came at a critical time in the second set to put Goshen up 25-24.

The Leafs host #7 Indiana Tech on Tuesday, February 7, at 7:00 pm. The Warriors are 2-2 through February 3.
