GOSHEN, Ind. - The Maple Leafs softball team dropped both contests in a doubleheader against #20 Mount Vernon Nazarene on Monday. The Cougars won game one 12-3 and had a six-run fourth inning in game two to win 6-1.
Sheridan Sullivan had the game one start for the Cougars. The sophomore is tied for the league-lead in strikeouts and added 13 to her total on Monday. However, the Maple Leafs got under her skin early. As the second GC batter of the game,
Shea VanScoter hit a long two-run home run after
Kaylee Kates reached on a single to quickly make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Peyton Foreman added a solo shot in the second to make it 3-0. It was the first home run and fourth overall hit this season for the first-year from Monmouth, Oregon.
The Cougars gained control in the top of the third, though. They scored in four of the next five innings, whereas Goshen didn't score any more runs. MVNU finished with 12 runs on 15 hits.
Alisyn Catenacci went 5.2 innings for Goshen and allowed five earned runs while striking out five. VanScoter went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run.
Goshen scored first in game two as well, but couldn't maintain the lead.
VanScoter got the start, and contributed offensively in the third with an RBI single that scored
Liliana Herrera. She held Mount Vernon Nazarene to no runs on one hit through the first three innings, but they attacked in the fourth. Two two-run home runs and a two-run triple made it 6-1, and neither team scored for the rest of the game. Goshen ended the game with three hits and MVNU had ten.
VanScoter took just her second loss this season as a pitcher, and her record moves to 8-2.
Esme Pico didn't allow any runs or hits as she got the final two outs in the top of the seventh. VanScoter had four of Goshen's seven hits between the two games. Mount Vernon's Nadia Hoffman threw 12 strikeouts in the game.
MVNU improves to 12-5 in the Crossroads League and 20-6 overall. Goshen looks to reverse a three-game losing skid against Bethel at home on Tuesday, April 11. Game one starts at 3:00 pm. The games are a part of the
U.S. Highway 20 Cup, which Bethel leads so far this year - 9.5 to 4.0.
