Goshen clinches conference tournament spot, sets program record for league wins in a season

The previous record of 14 conference wins came from last year's team

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Goshen softball team clinched a spot in the Crossroads League tournament with their 8-7 game one win over Grace on Saturday afternoon in Winona Lake. They also set a program record for league wins in a season with 15. The Lancers won game two 1-0.

The previous record of 14 conference wins came from last year's team that finished 14-22 in the Crossroads League. There are six regular season conference games left for the Leafs to add to that total. Goshen is one win away from tying the program record for overall wins in a season.

Grace scored the first two runs of the game, and Goshen finally got a hit in the fourth inning. Then in the fifth, the Leafs exploded for five runs. Liliana Herrera scored as a pinch runner for Alisyn Catenacci when Peyton Foreman singled down the left field line. Kamille Badibanga was up next and hit a double deep to right-center which scored Ella Mcleod. Ellie Van Heerde hit a single to shallow right field later in the inning, which scored two more runs and made it 4-1. She scored when Shea VanScoter hit a single to third. By the end of the inning, Goshen had scored five runs on seven hits and led by four.

Mckenzie Richardson joined the action in the seventh with an RBI single, and Catenacci hit a sac fly to center. The Leafs led 8-3 at that point, but the Lancers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the game interesting. Catenacci got Taylor Hodgen to fly out to end the game as the Leafs held on to win 8-7.

Catenacci improved to 12-8 this season and threw 149 pitches in the game. Van Heerde had two RBIs for Goshen, and VanScoter, Diamond, Mcleod and Badibanga had two hits each.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between Shea VanScoter and Alexis Bergman. VanScoter allowed one run in six innings pitched but had the loss. She threw four strikeouts and allowed four hits. The game's only run came in the third when Hodgen scored on a single to shallow right-center from Tia O'Connor. Bergman gave up no runs or walks in seven innings pitched and added six strikeouts.

Goshen outhit Grace 5-4. The only extra-base hit for the Leafs came off the bat of Bianca Diamond.

The Maple Leafs (23-20, 15-15 CL) host Taylor on Tuesday, April 25, at 3:00 pm.
