Brenneman's seven aces put Leafs over Yellow Jackets, Saints win first match in Grand Rapids

Bellamy had ten kills and ten digs against Defiance

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Thirteen aces against Defiance helped the Maple Leafs to a 2-1 record on Wednesday in the early 2023 season. After losing to Aquinas in three sets earlier in the day, the Leafs took down the Yellow Jackets in four sets. The Aquinas Tri-Match was initially supposed to be played last Friday but had to be rescheduled due to a power outage from a tornado in the Grand Rapids area.

Aquinas improved their record this season to 6-2 with the win over Goshen in the first match. They dominated the kills category 39-16 and assists 36-16. The Saints scored the final four points in the first set to take a three-point lead to a seven-point win. The Leafs were down 21-14 in the second set before battling back but lost 25-20. Then the home team cruised to a 25-12 win in the final frame thanks in part to an 8-0 run in the middle of the set.

Sadie Brenneman and Gwyn Bellamy had five kills each for Goshen. Kelsie Hankins totaled 13 assists, and Emily Lynch had two block assists. Kassidy Faler led the team with ten digs. The win was the fourth straight for Aquinas this year.

The Leafs had a 15-0 run that forced the Yellow Jackets to call two timeouts and took a one-point deficit to a 14-point lead. The second set was the opposite. Defiance won 25-9 after scoring the first six points. The Leafs returned to win the next two by scores of 25-19 and 25-18.
