FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Goshen women's volleyball team lost both matches on day one of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament held on the campus of Indiana Tech on Friday night. They lost to the host in three sets in the first match before dropping a tight five-set match against Saint Ambrose.
Indiana Tech finished 28-8 last season and moved to 9-2 this year with the three-set sweep of Goshen. This season, they already have two wins against ranked opponents - #21 Marian and #17 Bellevue.
The Leafs had six attack errors in the first set but only six combined in the second and third sets. They increased their point total as the sets went on - from 14 to 16 to 19.
Sadie Brenneman had 11 kills and a .421 hitting percentage.
Alaina Wolfe had double-digit digs for a fifth-straight match.
The first three sets in the match against Saint Ambrose were one-sided for either one team or the other. The Leafs took the first set 25-16, but the Fighting Bees won the second set 25-16 and the third 25-17. Goshen returned to win the fourth set 25-22 and sent it to the fifth and final set.
The Bees won the first three points and put GC in an early hole. Eventually, Saint Ambrose went up 14-13 and needed just one point to win. But back-to-back kills from
Christina Towne gave Goshen a match point. Saint Ambrose took a timeout and scored the following two points, but Goshen got another point when they needed it most. But back-to-back kills from the Bees ended the set at 18-16 and the match at 3-2.
Sadie Brenneman had 16 digs and several pivotal saves in the final set.
Alaina Wolfe led all players on the court with 21 digs. Brenneman also had 23 kills - her previous collegiate high was 16.
Kelsie Hankins had a season-high 49 assists and tied a season-best with 11 digs.
Saturday is the final day of the tournament, and the Maple Leafs start things off at 10:00 am against Concordia (Mich.). Then, at noon, they will take on Indiana University-Northwest.
