Cougars enact revenge on Goshen Senior Day, beat Leafs in three

Seniors Sadie Brenneman and Jaelyn Amhdar recognized before the match

GOSHEN, Ind. - After ending their Crossroads League losing streak on the road at Saint Francis in a sweep earlier this season, the Cougars returned the favor in Goshen on Senior Day in Ruth Gunden Gymnasium. Saint Francis won 25-21, 25-17, 25-23.

Goshen was down quickly 13-4 in the first set and the visitors never let off of the initial steam. Goshen was down 11 at 22-11 and came all the way back to within three, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome in the 25-21 defeat.

Goshen never held a lead in the second set as the Cougars totaled 12 kills to just one attack error. Down 20-14 in the third set, Goshen rallied to tie it at 22 after an 8-2 run. Yet, USF won three of the last four points to take the set by two.

Sadie Brenneman had 13 kills, six digs and a solo block in the match. Kelsie Hankins also had a solo block with 23 assists and four digs. It was just the second conference match this season that Goshen had two solo blocks. Alaina Wolfe led the team with nine digs. Brenna Spangler had a pair of block assists.

The Maple Leafs host Bethel on Wednesday, October 23, at 7:00 pm.

Goshen seniors Sadie Brenneman and Jaelyn Amhdar were recognized for Senior Day. Here is what was said about them before the match:

First to be recognized is #17, Jaelyn Amhdar! Jaelyn is from Richmond, Michigan, and is being escorted by her parents Heidi and George Amhdar. Jaelyn is an exercise science major with minors in disability studies and psychology and plans to attend grad school to get her doctorate in occupational therapy. She had 765 assists as a Maple Leaf with 29 aces across 79 matches played. Coach Phillips says, "Jaelyn has contributed to the growth of this program in a variety of ways. She has brought energy, a positive attitude and a team-first approach to everything she does. Her leadership can be seen throughout our program in mentoring younger players, setting a great example and caring about each individual. We wish her nothing but the best going forward and can't wait to see what she accomplishes in the future." Thank you, Jaelyn!

Next up is #7, Sadie Brenneman! Sadie is from Goshen, Indiana, and is being escorted by her parents Steve and Victoria Brenneman. She is majoring in journalism with a minor in marketing and plans to do some traveling with friends after college and find a job in marketing or public relations. Sadie is one of just three players in Goshen College women's volleyball history with both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Coach Phillips says, "Sadie will go down as one of the best volleyball players in Goshen College history - her stats speak for themselves. She led by example and brought a commitment to growth and improvement that we can only hope rubbed off on her teammates. We will miss her drive, strength and her never-quit attitude in the gym next year. But we know that she will be successful in whatever she chooses to do from here. Even if, as she describes, she might want to do everything." Thank you, Sadie!
