GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Goshen College women's basketball team fell to Aquinas College 76-65 on Saturday. The Leafs are now 3-2 this season.
Aquinas took a commanding lead over the Maple Leafs in the first quarter, ending with a 23-10 advantage. The Saints were efficient from beyond the arc, making six of their nine three-point attempts, while GC struggled with shooting, hitting only two of 15 baskets. Aquinas also capitalized on the Goshen's six turnovers in the quarter. In the second quarter, the Leafs outscored Aquinas 21-12, narrowing the Saints' lead. Goshen shot 58.8% from the field, making 10 of 17 attempts, while Aquinas managed 38.5% on 5-13 shooting.
Emme Boots hit a crucial three to bring GC within one point near the end of the quarter.
In the third, the Saints extended their lead over the Leafs in part by making all nine free-throw attempts.
Carrie Hiler and
Ava Lickliter each contributed two three-pointers to keep the game competitive. In the fourth, GC outscored Aquinas 17-15, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. The Maple Leafs shot 35.3% from the field, while Aquinas hit just one of eight shots. However, Aquinas capitalized on free throws, converting 13 of 16 attempts. Despite the Leafs' efforts in scoring from turnovers and in the paint, the Saints' excelled at the free-throw line, which helped secure their advantage.
Ava Lickliter had 12 points, including three threes. She led the team in assists with seven and added four steals to her performance.
Carrie Hiler scored 15 points with nine coming from beyond the arc.
Syanne Mohamed was a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 15 points with nine rebounds and three steals.
Paula Ferrer Nolla had two blocks and six rebounds and
Emme Boots added five points and five boards.
Goshen is at Bethel on Wednesday, November 20, to begin Crossroads League play. The game will tipoff at 5:30 pm.
