VALPARAISO, Ind. - Goshen fell to Valparaiso 72-41 on Monday, an exhibition game that saw the Maple Leafs in their first matchup against Valpo in nearly 40 years. Goshen faced challenges early on after starting 7-11 from the field and then missing 15 consecutive shots.
Valparaiso led 23-15 at the end of the first quarter against the Maple Leafs, mainly due to their significant rebounding edge, grabbing 12 boards to the Leafs' four. Goshen led 13-8 early but Valpo had an 8-0 run. The Maple Leafs had seven points off of turnovers compared to Valpo's two.
Valpo outscored the Leafs 20-8 in the second quarter, capitalizing on Goshen's nine turnovers. The Leafs hit just one of 11Â shots but managed to score six points from the free-throw line.
Zion Neat picked up her third foul right before the half and was held to two points on 1-3 shooting in 12 minutes in the first half. Goshen got more second chances in the second quarter and led in offensive rebounds six to three. However, the shots they were putting back up were not going down. Goshen was shooting 30% (8-27) whereas the home team was at 60% (18-30). Valpo increased their lead by two after the third quarter and outscored the Leafs 14-5 in the fourth.
Syanne Mohamed stood out with a strong performance, scoring nine points on 4-7 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds, the most on the team.
Emme Boots contributed with five points and five rebounds.
Zoe Zellers scored six points while providing three assists, the highest assist total for the team.
Ava Egolf led the Leafs with two steals in her ten minutes on the court.
