GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen baseball team won both games of their home opener on Wednesday against the Trinity Christian Trolls by scores of 15-8 and 4-3. Goshen was 2-10 against Trinity Christian since 2015 heading into Wednesday with their last win coming in 2017.
Game One
It took a little while for Goshen to get the offense rolling in game one, but they would score their first two runs in the third, add four in the fourth, put up six in the fifth and then finished it with three more in the sixth. The Trolls strung together four runs in the fifth and had an 8-6 lead, but that was before the Maple Leafs responded with six of their own.
Highlights from the GC offense mainly came in the fifth inning. It started with a two-RBI single from
Chris Godden, followed by a two-RBI double from
Justin Dambruck.
Jenner Rodammer hit in two runs, and as he slid into third base, the throw went out, and he was awarded a trip to home plate to give the Leafs an 11-8 lead at that point.
Chris Godden had a two-RBI double in the sixth inning.
Baylor Orcutt was the starter, allowing two earned runs on three hits in four innings pitched. He struck out four and walked one.
AJ Lenn didn't allow any hits in two innings pitched, with two strikeouts and no walks.
Game Two
The second contest was more of a pitcher's duel, and Goshen had a tremendous outing from the duo of
Peyton Smith and
Lance Wilson.
Smith threw the first four innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits. Wilson came in for the next three and allowed one earned run on two hits.
The Leafs' early offense came from a pair of RBI doubles.
Joseph Cerda had the first in the first inning, and
Trent Sillett added his own in the third.
Jenner Rodammer scored the run for both.
The Trolls tied the game on a two-run home run from Anthony Cappelletti, but
Steven Lopez had an RBI single to score
Peyton Smith in the bottom half of the same inning. The last of Goshen's scoring came from Smith himself on an RBI single.
Lopez earned his first RBI of his GC career and just his second hit. Cerda was 3-3 and
Peyton Smith was 2-3.
Goshen (4-4) will next play three games at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky, on February 23 and 24.
