Rocky start leads to 13-point loss at Taylor

The Goshen defense allowed a season-low 67 points

UPLAND, Ind. - For the second straight game, Goshen had a rocky first five minutes and then outscored their opponent in the second half. The early deficit proved costly on Saturday when Goshen was at Taylor, as the Leafs lost 67-54.

The Trojans had a 17-2 lead to start the game. For the remaining 34 minutes and 57 seconds, GC outscored them 52-50. Goshen has been outscored 27-2 in the first five minutes in the last two games. In the last 35 minutes of those games, they have only been outscored 117-113.

Goshen cut the lead to ten later in the first half but were down as many at 18 in the second half. The Maple Leafs responded by cutting it back down to nine points on a couple of occasions, but the Trojans powered through in the last five minutes to win by 13 points.

The 67 points the Leafs allowed is the lowest they have given up to an opponent this season. However, the 54 points that Goshen scored is their second-lowest.

Judah Simfukwe scored 15 points and had seven rebounds and two steals. DJ Bryant had seven points and four of the team's six assists - tied for the team's second-lowest this season. Isaac Miller had five points and five boards with no turnovers in 22 minutes played. Jared Bonds scored ten points and had four rebounds.

Goshen has been eliminated from making the Crossroads League tournament, but they have two games remaining. The Maple Leafs are at #6 Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday, February 21, at 7:00 pm before hosting Huntington on Saturday for Senior Day.
