Leafs win series over Pilots with 32 runs during Monday doubleheader

Goshen is at #24 Concordia on Tuesday

GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen baseball scored 32 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Bethel on Monday as they won the series 3-1. The Leafs won game one 13-8 and game two 19-10. Goshen has more wins in their last four matchups against the Pilots than they had in their previous 16 meetings.

Game One
More than half of the Goshen runs in game one came in the fourth inning alone. Trent Sillett hit a three run home run off the scoreboard and Justin Dambruck came up two batters later and hit a solo blast off the scoreboard. Peyton Smith was the next batter and nearly sent a third out of the yard, but it bounced right before the wall and ended as a double.

Chris Godden had an RBI triple in the second, his first triple as a Maple Leaf. Head coach Brad Stoltzfus made a series of moves in the eighth inning that elevated Goshen's 10-8 lead to a 13-8 score. Ryan Maloney came in to pinch hit for Collin Echols. Maloney walked and Giacomo Padilla came in to pinch run. Chris Godden singled and then Chase Smith pinch hit for Joey Paternostro. Smith singled immediately and Padilla scored from second. Andres Garcia doubled later in the inning and two more runs came home.

Corey Brown had the win for Goshen, striking out five from the fourth through the sixth innings. Jenner Rodammer had four RBIs and Trent Sillett had three. Rodammer, Sillett, Andres Garcia, Peyton Smith and Chris Godden had two hits each.

Game Two
The second game was certainly a game of runs. RBI singles from Trent Sillett and Joseph Cerda gave Goshen an early 2-0 lead but the Pilots scored two in the second and three in the third to go up 5-2. The Maple Leafs took the lead back in the third with five runs - led by solo home runs by Joseph Cerda and Justin Dambruck. They scored one in the fourth and once more in the fifth, that time on a homer from Andres Garcia.

The lead now stood at 9-5 until Bethel used a three-run home run and then a two-run shot in the sixth to take a 10-9 lead. The pressure was put back on the Goshen offense, but they took it and ran with it.

The Maple Leafs scored ten runs in the sixth inning on nine hits. Joseph Cerda started the inning with a single and he would also single later in the inning. He was one of five Goshen players to have two at-bats in the inning. Justin Dambruck and Joshua Rubio had RBI doubles while Andres Garcia, Jenner Rodammer and Trent Sillett hit RBI singles. It was 19-10 when the inning ended and AJ Lenn didn't allow any runs in the top of the seventh so the Leafs won by the same score.

Lenn earned the win to improve to 2-2. He allowed one hit and no runs in 1.2 innings. Peyton Smith had ten strikeouts in five innings as the starter. He walked just one batter and allowed two earned runs. Cerda went 4-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Garcia, Rodammer and Dambruck had three hits each. Garcia had four RBIs and Sillett scored three times.

Goshen is at #24 Concordia (Mich.) on Tuesday, March 12, at 2:00 pm for a single nine-inning game in Ann Arbor.
