Cerda's go-ahead ninth inning homer gives GC win over #24 Concordia

Sillett walks four times, Leafs walk 11 times in total

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Goshen baseball team is on a four-game win streak after winning on the road at #24 Concordia (Mich.) 6-5. Joseph Cerda hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the ninth.

The Maple Leafs got on the board first when Andres Garcia hit a two-RBI single up the middle in the second to score Peyton Hill and Curtis Huffman. The Cardinals took revenge with two runs of their own in the third - RBI singles off the bats of Josh Burke and Drew Fleming. Concordia took the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice bunt.

Goshen starter Giacomo Padilla pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits. He had two strikeouts and two walks.

Jenner Rodammer scored from a Tren Sillett single in the top of the fifth and Sillett came around to home when Chase Smith doubled down the left field line. However, Concordia erased Goshen's lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning - an RBI single and a runner that scored on a wild pitch.

Benjamin Witterstaetter was on the mound for the Leafs and after allowing the two unearned runs, he didn't allow any others. In 3.0 innings pitched, Witterstaetter allowed no earned runs and just two hits. Braxton Pratt came in for the eighth inning and held the Cardinals scoreless.

Down 5-4 in the top of the ninth, Rodammer reached base on a fielding error with one out in the inning. Cerda came up next and homered to left to give the Leafs a 6-5 lead. Goshen had a few walks later in the inning but left the bases loaded as the teams headed to the bottom of the ninth. Concordia got a runner to third, but Braxton Pratt made it through and earned the win, allowing one hit and no earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched.

Cerda went 3-5 and all his hits were for extra bases. The third baseman had two doubles, the go-ahead home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Trent Sillett contributed with four walks - Goshen had 11 as a team. The Leafs have had 11 or more walks in three games already this season. In 2023, they had no such games through the whole season. Garcia had two RBIs and Rodammer scored twice.

Goshen (9-11, 4-4 CL) is at Indiana Wesleyan on Friday, March 15, at 3:00 pm for the first two games of a four-game set.
