GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen softball is 2-0 to start Crossroads League play after sweeping two games against Bethel on Tuesday at the GC Softball Complex. The Maple Leafs won game one 8-7, their third walk-off win of the season. They won game two more decidedly, 8-0 in six innings.
Game One
Two first inning home runs gave Goshen an early 4-0 lead.
Esme Pico hit a three-run shot and the next batter,
Olivia Gibson, added a solo homer. The Leafs were held scoreless for the next few innings and Bethel had cut their deficit in half by the middle of the fifth.
Shea VanScoter hit Goshen's third home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth and the lead was extended to 5-2.
Esme Pico threw five innings as the GC starter and allowed two earned runs.
In the top of the seventh, Bethel put up a five-spot and wound up with a 7-5 lead - their first lead of the game with just half an inning to go.
Shea VanScoter singled down the left field line to start the bottom of the seventh but then the Leafs had two popups in a row and they were down to the final out. VanScoter stole second,
Mckenzie Richardson walked and
Carissa Fillingame came up next. She homered to right center, a walk-off winner, and Goshen won 8-7.
Goshen's previous two walk-off wins this season came in Florida when they were designated as the home team. The first was a 4-3 win against Michigan-Dearborn in nine innings and the next was a 5-4 win over Florida Memorial in eight innings.
Camryn Barrows earned the win for her seventh inning work and is now 5-0.
Shea VanScoter had two hits and three runs scored.
Esme Pico and
Carissa Fillingame had three RBIs apiece.
Game Two
In the second contest, Goshen only had one out when what would be the winning run had scored.
Grace Schmitt hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first which gave Goshen a 2-0 lead and would be all that they needed. The duo of
Shea VanScoter and
Alisyn Catenacci threw three innings each, both allowing one hit and no earned runs. Catenacci holds a 2-1 record with the win.
On the other hand, the Goshen offense erupted for 13 hits. They scored five in the bottom of the fourth and once more in the sixth to win by mercy rule. Schmitt had three hits and three RBIs. Catenacci went 2-2 with a run scored.
Sydney Lockhart was 2-3 and
Carissa Fillingame scored twice.
The Maple Leafs are 2-0 in the Crossroads League and 13-3 overall. They host Huntington on Wednesday, March 13, at 3:00 pm. These games were moved up from Friday to avoid poor weather.
