GC and USF split Saturday series

VanScoter goes 3-4 with two extra-base hits in game two

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After being shutout in the first game of a doubleheader against Saint Francis, the Leafs put up eight runs in a game two win. The Cougars won 8-0 before the Leafs won the next, 8-3.

Game One
Goshen had seven hits in the game but couldn't bring the runners home. Grace Schmitt had the start for the Leafs and didn't allow any runs in her first three innings. But in the fifth, she allowed a couple of runs to score. After allowing a single in the fifth, she was taken out and Camryn Barrows came into the game. Barrows had allowed just three earned runs in her first 29.0 innings this season, but today she allowed five earned runs in 1.0 inning pitched. The Cougars won by mercy rule when they extended the lead to 8-0 in the sixth.

Barrows is still undefeated this year at 6-0 with a 1.87 ERA. Grace Schmitt picked up the loss and is 2-2 this season. Schmitt and Ella Mcleod had two hits each in the game. All seven of Goshen's hits were singles.

Game Two
The hit totals for the teams were flipped in game two - this time Goshen had 11 hits and Saint Francis had seven. The Leafs got on the board in the first inning when Mckenzie Richardson hit an RBI groundout that scored Shea VanScoter. Then VanScoter homered in the third inning to make it 2-0. Richardson came back with a two-RBI single in the fifth to take the lead to 4-0.

Esme Pico threw four innings for Goshen and didn't allow any runs on four hits. The Cougars scored a couple of runs in the fifth, but GC added four to their total in the sixth. Carissa Fillingame hit an RBI triple down the right field line and she later scored on a passed ball. VanScoter had an RBI double and Ella Mcleod contributed an RBI single to right field. Saint Francis scored once in the bottom of the seventh to put the final score at 8-3.

Shea VanScoter allowed two earned runs when she came in to pitch the last three innings. Offensively she went 3-4 and had two RBIs, three runs scored, a stolen base and two extra base hits in a double and a home run. Richardson had three RBIs and Mcleod had two hits and a stolen base.

Goshen is 4-2 in the last six meetings with Saint Francis. The Leafs (15-5, 4-2 CL) host #10 Marian on Tuesday, March 19, at 3:00 pm.
