Leafs fall twice to Wildcats

Pico hits her first home run of the season in game two

GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen softball lost to #17 Indiana Wesleyan twice on Monday at the GC Softball Complex. The Wildcats are now 20-4 overall and 11-1 in the Crossroads League after the 13-1 and 10-8 wins. Goshen is 15-7 and 4-4 in conference play.

Game One
Indiana Wesleyan used three four-run innings on the way to their game one mercy rule win. They had 15 hits and didn't reach base on a walk, but they didn't have any strikeouts either. Goshen managed just four hits, all singles. The lone Maple Leaf run came when Hailey Elgan scored from third while Carissa Fillingame was caught stealing second in the fourth inning.

Grace Schmitt had the loss, pitching the whole five innings.

Game Two
Goshen got a hot start in game two but couldn't sustain it.

After an IWU RBI double in the top of the first, Schmitt hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning. But the Leafs scored six runs once they reached the bottom of the third. Shea VanScoter had an RBI double and Bianca Diamond hit a two-run home run to highlight the inning.

The Maple Leafs led 7-1, but the Wildcats immediately began to get back in a groove. They scored on a two-run homer in the fourth and scored five more in the fifth. Esme Pico hit a home run down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at eight. It was her first home run since April 15 last season. However, IWU added two more runs in the sixth and held GC scoreless for the next two innings to win 10-8.

Alisyn Catenacci allowed six earned runs in 4.1 innings while starting for the Leafs. She struck out four and walked one. Esme Pico had the loss, allowing three earned runs over 2.2 innings.

VanScoter finished 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base. Diamond was 2-3 with the home run and two RBIs.

Goshen is at Grace on Thursday, March 28, at 3:00 pm.
