GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Ishmail Bangura brought down 19 kills in a three-set sweep against Aquinas on Saturday as Goshen earned win number eight of the season. The Maple Leafs won 28-26, 25-11, 29-27 on the road.
Goshen is 6-2 in the last eight matchups with Aquinas. In the first set, Goshen never had more than a three-point lead and Aquinas no more than two points. With a 23-21 lead for Aquinas,
Hasan Hadzic had a kill and
Ishmail Bangura had two more, all on assists from
Igor Sapucaia, and Goshen was at set point. The Saints called a timeout and scored the next point. The teams went back and forth until a kill by Bangura, his eighth of the set, ended it 28-26.
Despite what the score indicated, Aquinas had a 4-1 lead in the second set. But after that point, Goshen outscored them 24-7 for the rest of the set. Goshen had three aces and five blocks in the set, Aquinas didn't have any of either. The Leafs hit .429 while Aquinas was a measly -.200. They had four kills during set two.
They came back strong in the third set, with more back-and-forth action. This time Aquinas never had more than a three-point edge and Goshen didn't lead by more than two points. However, it was the two-point lead at the end that mattered for GC. They scored the last three after being down 27-26, which included a kill and an ace from
Sawyer Frystak.
Goshen had a .304 hitting percentage, improving their record to 6-0 when they have a mark of .300 or above. The Leafs easily won the kills category 47-25 and the assists 42-23.
Bangura had 19 kills and
Hasan Hadzic had ten with five of the team's six aces.
Bruno Barac had eight block assists for the fourth time this season and the third time in the last four matches.
Igor Sapucaia finished with 40 assists, averaging more than 13 per set.
Goshen hosts Bethel on Thursday, March 28, at 7:00 pm. The Leafs must win in order to still have a chance at winning the annual athletic department-wide U.S. Highway 20 Cup against the Pilots.
