Goshen starts series at USF with two losses

Smith, Rodammer hit RBI doubles in game two

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Baseball lost a pair of games on the road at Saint Francis on Saturday. The Cougars won 10-2 and 6-5.

Game One
Some relief pitchers gave the Maple Leafs some solid performances, but the Cougars made enough noise early on to secure a win.

Saint Francis scored twice in the second and added three in the third to go up 5-0. Goshen got on the board in the fourth with a Joey Paternostro RBI single to right field, but three RBI singles in the fifth from USF took their lead to 9-1. Joshua Rubio hit a sac fly in the seventh, the Cougars were hit by a pitch in the eighth with the bases loaded, and the final score was 10-2.

Benjamin Witterstaetter, Brody Kennedy and Drew Miles combined to throw the last 3.2 innings and allowed just one earned run on two hits. The Leafs had four singles from Andres Garcia, Jenner Rodammer, Chase Smith and Joey Paternostro. GC had three more walks than their opponent but 11 more strikeouts.

Game Two
Although Goshen rallied to tie with Saint Francis in the second game, the Cougars' late go-ahead run sealed the deal.

After a USF solo homer in the first, Goshen responded with Peyton Smith's two-RBI double to left field in the top of the second. The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the second and three in the third to go up 5-2. In the fourth, Andres Garcia had an RBI single and Jenner Rodammer provided a two-RBI double to tie the game.

USF was held scoreless for the next two innings, but with runners on the corners in the sixth, Jayden Lepper stole second and the runner from third came home on the throw. The Leafs went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

David Lopez allowed five earned runs in five innings. Rodammer and Smith each had two RBIs. In addition to their hits, both doubles, Andres Garcia and Chase Smith had singles.

Goshen is at Saint Francis again on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
