MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Goshen softball was shut out twice at Mount Vernon on Thursday afternoon. The Cougars won 8-0 and 10-0 to take three of the four games in the season series.
Game One
Goshen had more errors than hits in game one as MVNU's Nadia Hoffman threw ten strikeouts through five innings of work.
Mollie Pentz, Kiera Mayer and Mackenzie Hancock hit triples for the Cougars, and all three scored runners already on base. Five runs came from RBI triples, two were on plays with Goshen errors, and the game's first run was on a sacrifice fly.
Shea VanScoter,
Ella Mcleod and
Rachel Kates had hits for Goshen, and they were all singles. VanScoter allowed two earned runs in three innings as the starting pitcher.
Alisyn Catenacci gave up five runs when she came in to pitch the last inning and a third, but none of the runs were earned.
Game Two
Only five innings needed to be played in game two, as the Cougars had four runs in the first inning, six in the third, and held the Maple Leafs to just one hit.
Mount Vernon Nazarene had two more triples, a double, and a home run in the game. The only hit came from
Shea VanScoter, a single with two outs in the top of the third. Sheridan Sullivan had nine strikeouts and didn't allow any walks. She threw just 71 pitches in the game and earned the win.
Grace Schmitt lost, allowing then runs in three innings even though only four were earned. Goshen committed four errors in the game.
The Leafs can no longer receive a first-round bye in the league tournament next week, but with four games remaining, they could still place as high as sixth. Goshen has to win at least one remaining game to make the postseason. Goshen is at Taylor on Friday, with game one starting at noon, and Spring Arbor on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
