GOSHEN, Ind. - Despite being down 5-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Maple Leafs baseball team rallied back and defeated Huntington 6-5 in extra innings on Friday. The Foresters won the second game 9-4.
Game One
GC didn't have their first hit until the fourth inning of game one. The Foresters put up three runs in the fourth inning and added some cushioning with a run in the eighth and another in the ninth.
But when the Maple Leafs were down to their final few outs with a new pitcher on the mound, they opened the floodgate.
Chase Smith hit his first home run as a Maple Leaf with a two-run shot to right.
Curtis Huffman scored a run after a throwing error, and
Trent Sillett brought in two runs with his single to left center, tying the game. Huntington had runners on in the tenth inning but didn't bring any runs across.
After a flyout to start the bottom of the tenth,
Chris Godden hit his second home run of the day and his Goshen career to make Goshen victorious on a walk-off winner. Smith went 2-5 with two home runs and three RBIs. He came into the day with a .107 batting average.
Chris Godden scored twice,
Trent Sillett had two RBIs and
Joseph Cerda had a pair of singles.
Lance Wilson pitched the last three innings, giving up one earned run with three strikeouts and no walks. The win improves his record to 3-4 this season.
Game Two
Goshen struck first in the next game with a sac fly from
Trent Sillett in the first inning. But Huntington had three three-run innings in the third, fifth and sixth.
Chase Smith had an RBI single,
Peyton Smith scored on a wild pitch and
Jenner Rodammer hit an RBI groundout, but it wasn't enough for Goshen.
The Leafs had just five hits in the game, two each from
Andres Garcia and
Joseph Cerda. Both of Cerda's hits were doubles.
David Lopez took the loss, allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings.
GC (12-21, 7-14 CL) will try to nab their ninth and tenth home wins of the season against Huntington on Saturday, April 6, with game one beginning at noon.
