GOSHEN, Ind. - On Saturday, softball suffered two narrow losses to Saint Francis. The Cougars won one game 7-5 and two 3-2.
Game One
Only three of the seven Saint Francis runes were earned. The other four came due to four Goshen errors in the game. The Cougars scored two runs in the second and
Ellie Van Heerde tied it back up with a two-RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. USF added three runs in the third and had the lead for the rest of the game.
Goshen tried to make a push in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double from
Carissa Fillingame and a sac fly by
Olivia Gibson but came up short.
Esme Pico allowed three earned runs and five total runs in 4.1 innings as the starter. With the loss, she is 4-3 this year.
Grace Schmitt allowed no earned runs and two total runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
Alisyn Catenacci,
Carissa Fillingame and
Ellie Van Heerde had two hits apiece for the Leafs.
Game Two
The second game was a low-scoring affair. The Cougars had three runs after three innings but didn't score for the next four. Unfortunately, the three runs were all they needed for the win. Macie Dowd was a part of all three runs with a sac fly and a two-run homer.
In the fourth, Goshen first got on the board when
Olivia Gibson homered to center field. In the seventh, Gibson came home after a fielding error by the left fielder to make it 3-2. With
Ella Mcleod at third, the game ended when
Shea VanScoter's grounder to the second baseman narrowly got to first before she crossed the base.
Alisyn Catenacci had the loss, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Camryn Barrows pitched the remaining 2.2 innings and allowed no hits or earned runs. She struck out four and walked none. Gibson was 2-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Goshen totaled six hits and Saint Francis had five.
