Game Recap: Softball | | Justin DeWeese

Softball wins via walk-off for fifth time this year, Catenacci hits three homers across doubleheader

The three home runs were the first three of the season for Catenacci

GOSHEN, Ind. - Five of Goshen softball's 19 wins this season have been from walk-offs, with the fifth coming Monday against Spring Arbor. While the Cougars won the first game 10-6, The Leafs came back to win the second game 5-3.

Game One
Alisyn Catenacci hit a first-inning two-run home run in what was just the beginning of a massive day for the senior. However, Spring Arbor scored in the first four innings and led 10-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Maple Leafs avoided the run rule by scoring three times in the fifth. Catenacci had an RBI double and Mckenzie Richardson had an RBI groundout. Carissa Fillingame singled through the right side and scored Catenacci.

In the seventh inning, now down 10-5, Catenacci hit a solo shot to center field - her second home run. But that was as far as Goshen could rally, and SAU won 10-6.

Catenacci finished 4-4 with three runs and four RBIs. She had a single, a double and two home runs. Shea VanScoter and Bianca Diamond each had two singles. Esme Pico kept Goshen in the game by pitching the last 3.2 innings. She gave up just one hit and no earned runs.

Game Two
Spring Arbor scored the first three runs of game two, but Goshen scored the last five. And Alisyn Catenacci kept showing up at the plate.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the third, Shea VanScoter put the Leafs on the board when she scored on a wild pitch. Again, the Maple Leafs had a strong outing from their relief pitcher. This time, Camryn Barrows threw the last four innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs.

Catenacci hit her third home run of the day in the sixth inning, a two-run shot that also scored VanScoter. In the seventh, now tied at three, Kyra Wilson walked and advanced to second. Then, at the top of the lineup, VanScoter homered down the left field line, sending the Leafs away with a 5-3 win and their fifth walk-off win of the season.

Barrows got the win and now has a 7-1 record. VanScoter was 2-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Catenacci was 1-3 with a run and two RBIs. Goshen only had four hits in the game, two singles and two home runs. Spring Arbor is now 23-12 and 15-7 in the Crossroads League.

Goshen (19-13, 8-10 CL) is at Bethel on Tuesday, April 9, at 3:00 pm. To win the U.S. Highway 20 Cup, softball must win both games. If they lose one, there is still a chance to tie Bethel if both outdoor track & field teams have higher scores than the Pilots at the league championship.
