MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Goshen College softball reached 20 or more wins for the fifth straight full season after beating Bethel twice on the road Tuesday by identical 8-4 scores. The Leafs can still win the U.S. Highway 20 Cup this school year if they beat Bethel at the Crossroads League Championship in women's and men's outdoor track and field.
Game One
The Maple Leafs rattled off 15 hits from nine different hitters in game one.
Bethel scored first in the bottom of the first, but Goshen took the lead with four runs in the second inning.
Camryn Barrows, also the starting pitcher for the game, hit a two-RBI double and
Rachel Kates added an RBI single. After the freshmen contributed, senior
Olivia Gibson reached on a fielder's choice.
Shea VanScoter was out at third on the play, but
Kyra Wilson scored Goshen's fourth run.
The Pilots tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but GC retook the lead immediately following in the fifth.
Bianca Diamond's RBI single scored
Alisyn Catenacci, who had her own RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-4 game. As she was stealing second base,
Olivia Gibson stole home to extend the lead to three. Lastly,
Carissa Fillingame hit an RBI groundout that brought Catenacci home.
Catenacci was 4-4 with a double, three singles, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. After the game, she was 8-11 over the last three contests.
Bianca Diamond,
Rachel Kates and
Olivia Gibson all had two hits.
Camryn Barrows is now 8-1 this season after throwing the complete game. She allowed two earned runs and six hits in seven innings and had four strikeouts and two walks.
Game Two
The second game completed the season sweep of Bethel. The Pilots haven't won two games in a row against the Maple Leafs since the last matchup of the 2018 season and the first of the 2019 season.
Goshen loaded the bases in the first, and
Mckenzie Richardson walked to score
Shea VanScoter. The Pilots had a two-RBI single in the bottom half, but
Bianca Diamond's RBI single tied it in the third.
The Leafs put the hammer down with six runs in the fourth.
Olivia Gibson,
Mckenzie Richardson and
Kyra Wilson had RBI singles in the inning, and
Carissa Fillingame hit a three-run homer. BU scored once more in the fourth and fifth innings but was held scoreless in the sixth and seventh with
Esme Pico on the mound.
Alisyn Catenacci earned the win, allowing three earned runs in the first four innings. She struck out six and walked three. Pico allowed no earned runs and two hits in the last three innings. VanScoter was 3-4 with three singles and a walk, scoring two runs as well. Gibson and Richardson had two hits each and Fillingame had three RBIs.
