Second day of Racer Yellow Jacket Classic highlighted by five-set win over OCU

Spangler posts 17 kills across the two matches

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The GC women's volleyball team is 2-2 this season after a win and a loss on the second day of the Racer Yellow Jacket Classic. The Maple Leafs took down Ohio Christian in five sets before losing to Defiance in four.

Goshen vs Ohio Christian
Ohio Christian went up 24-16 to get to a set point in the first set. However, the resilient Maple Leafs scored seven straight points with Kelsie Hankins serving to make it 24-23 before the Trailblazers closed it out with a kill from Allison Haines. The next set was the opposite, as Goshen had a 24-18 lead before losing four points in a row. Brenna Spangler had a kill to win it for the Leafs 25-22.

GC had 12 attack errors in the third set and OCU won it 25-20. But in the final two sets, Goshen outscored their opponent 40-25. It started with a 25-19 fourth set win and they completed the comeback with a dominant 15-6 win in the fifth set. Goshen had six kills and no attack errors in the fifth with a .462 hitting percentage.

The Leafs had 15 more kills, six more aces, 18 more assists and 14 more digs than OCU. Spangler had ten kills, a .471 hitting percentage, five block assists and nine digs. Alaina Wolfe had 16 digs and Kassidy Faler added 14 more. Wolfe led the team with four aces. Hankins had 26 assists and Jaelyn Amhdar had 19, playing in four sets.

Goshen vs Defiance
The Maple Leafs scored just 12 points in the first set against Defiance, but had at least 23 in each of the next three sets. The Leafs came out on top 25-22 in a tight second set and lost the net two both by a 25-23 score.

Sadie Brenneman had 12 kills and 12 digs for the Leafs and Spangler had another strong showing with a .500 hitting percentage. Wolfe totaled 19 digs. Amhdar had 16 assists and Hankins had 12.

Goshen (2-2) will play their home opener next on Tuesday, August 20, against Trinity Christian at 6:00 pm.
