BELLEVUE, Neb. - On day two of the GoSarpy.com Classic, the GC women's volleyball team lost to Saint Mary (Kan.) 3-1 and to #2 Northwestern College (Iowa) 3-0.
Goshen vs Saint Mary
Saint Mary had a hitting percentage of at least .200 for all four sets, whereas Goshen did so for just one. A 5-0 run early in the first set gave them the cushion they needed for a 25-18 win. However, Goshen got a quick 4-1 lead in the second. Saint Mary had multiple leads in the set, even as late as 24-23, but the Maple Leafs always fought back. Goshen scored the last three points of the set with a kill from
Kelsie Hankins and the last two by
Brenna Spangler to win 26-24.
The teams were tied 14-14 in both the third and fourth sets, but on both occasions, Saint Mary controlled the second half of the sets to prevail by 25-18 and 25-19 scores.
Sadie Brenneman had 17 kills and 11 digs for Goshen.
Kassidy Faler had 20 digs and
Alaina Wolfe added 18 more.
Kelsie Hankins had 40 assists.
Goshen vs #2 Northwestern College
The Maple Leafs had a 5-0 run against the #2 team in the NAIA in the first set of the match. Goshen led 10-9 at that point, but the Red Raiders rattled off 12 straight points in return, and they went on to win the set 25-12. They continued the momentum with a 12-1 lead in the second, which ended up being a 25-11 set win. A 15-6 lead in the third translated into a 25-12 win in the final set.
Northwestern had 17 aces and a .388 hitting percentage. Eight of the aces came from Logan Miller. Brenneman led the Leafs with seven kills and Wolfe and Faler had six digs each. Hankins totaled 16 assists.
Goshen plays at Aquinas College on Wednesday, August 28. They'll challenge Saint Xavier in a neutral site match at 5:00 pm before taking on Aquinas at 7:00 pm.
